Lexington, South Carolina Real Estate: In 1820, two acres of land were purchased for Lexington County’s new courthouse and jail. With a central location and healthy landscape, the site was a big improvement over the former county seat of Granby, an area subject to spring flooding. This was the first development in the area and settlers soon began to establish themselves around the courthouse. In the years that followed, the town’s business district suffered from fires in 1865, 1894 and 1916. As a result, many of the buildings in the business district were rebuilt out of brick.
Today, the town of Lexington, SC is best known for its proximity to Lake Murray and the related recreational opportunities available. Lexington County is actually one of four counties bordering the lake. The others are Newberry, Richland and Saluda.
